The Massif Central is the high upland area of central southern France. While it stretches into six of France's regions, the large part of the Massif Central lies in the regions of Auvergne and Limousin. Most of this part of France is relatively sparsely populated upland country, culminating with the volcanic peaks of the Monts d'Auvergne. However the northern parts of the Limousin and the Auvergne, in particular the department of the Allier,  include the pastoral upper areas of the Loire valley basin.

  • Bourbon-L'Archambault (03 Allier)
    Grand Hotel Montespan-Talleyrand ***  If this hotel were in Paris, it could charge three times the rates it does. Out-of-the-way Bourbon l'Archambault, historic fief of the house of Bourbon, is now a small sleepy country spa town, near Moulins. This genteel hotel (with pool) occupies a historic building, decorated with period furnishings. Spacious rooms, good restaurant.
  • Meaulne (03 Allier)
    Au Cœur de Meaulne 
    Attractive contemporary hotel in an old building in the heart of the quiet village of Meaulne, not far off the A71 motorway. Meaulne is just about at the geographic centre of France. Close to the old oak forest of Tronçais. Advance booking essential, as this hotel only has six rooms... and a great restaurnat.
  • Paulhaguet, (43 - Haute Loire) 
    Hôtel Domaine St. Roch    Salzuit, near Paulhaguet . Delightful boutique hotel in a recently renovated chateau on a hillside overlooking the valley. Just off the N 102 route through the Auvergne region. Spa. Listed with "relais du silence". Excellent reviews.

     Hôtel la Crèche     Three star hotel in the village of La Chomette, beside the N 102 just south of Brioude in the direction of Le Puy. Restaurant and bar. Very good value.
  •  €  Moudeyres, SW of Le Puy (43 Haute Loire)
    Hotel la Randonnée ** . Great value and a friendly welcome at this hotel in the open spaces of the high plateaux of southern Haute Loire. The name means "the Hike", and not surprisingly it is a superb location for hikers. Restaurant serves local dishes using local produce.

    Hostellerie la Bonne Hotesse ** Located beside this beautiful lake in the mountains of Sancy, Auvergne, this family-run hotel has 7 comfortable clean rooms. Very helpful and welcoming staff. The restaurant serves traditional Auvergnat cuisine. Plenty of outdoor activities in the immediate vicinity.

    Auberge sur Vezere    A lovely 10-room rural auberge with English-speaking proprietors. The rooms are small, but clean and comfortable, and the welcome is friendly. Quiet location only a few kilometres from the A20 and A89 motorways .
  • Argentat sur Dordogne  (19 Corrèze)
     €    The Hotel Fouillade ** is in a traditional old building  on a quiet square in the old centre of Argentat, a delightful small town on the upper Dordogne. A choice of comfortable rooms for different budgets, and a good family run restaurant with terrace serving many traditional dishes. Excellent value.
